Dec. 5th, 2010 @ 04:04 pm Gift ideas
So, again, I'm posting here because this seems to be an awesome resource and I really appreciate you all responding.

My boyfriend is going to China to teach english. He never has before and I really want to get him something that will be useful over there for a christmas present. Is there something that any of you couldn't live without when you studied abroad? Any guides or things that you found useful?

Any sort of gift ideas for someone going to teach abroad in asia (china) would be awesome.

Thanks!

I don't know what is and isn't available in China, but what I love getting the most when people send stuff from home is toiletries that aren't available here in Japan. Especially DEODERANT, ha ha. My advice would be to put together a care package of things he won't be able to get in China... any toiletries or snacks he likes. Yeah, it's not so exciting, but having that little bit of home makes life much easier.

I totally agree. Once you go to a foreign country and realize your normal toiletries aren't there, you realize how wonderful they truly are:-P

To the OP: I would suggest doing a google search about expats in China to find out what sort of everyday items China is lacking.

I would also getting him a "Survival China" guide book. I'm in Korea and have one, and it has helped me tremendously. It contains common Korean vocabulary, conversational language, and a small dictionary, as well as cultural tips.

Shoes!! Good ones. I can find most things in VN (toiletries included) but the shoes either don't fit or fall apart the moment they get wet. Or both.

Oy my goodness, that is so true! I'm in S. Korea, and as a woman with size 11 feet, I can only fit into men's shoes here.

Where will be be in China? That is key! Where I lived there was no supermarket to get western comfort snacks, but it's not the case everywhere! :)
